Course Dates 2011

All the courses for 2011 have now finished but 2012 will be announced next month.

If you've always wanted to learn to draw, Dr. Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain 5-day intensive course is a proven technique for teaching drawing - particularly to those people who swear they could never be taught to draw! This course is taught in the UK by Anna Black, certified and licensed by Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Inc.

Courses take place in central London (Little Venice), which are non-residential, and North Wales, near Bangor, (residential). The course lasts for 5 days and includes 35 hours of teaching and The Drawing Portfolio (RRP over £70).
The contents of the Drawing Portfolio were designed by Dr Betty Edwards and Brian Bomeisler. It includes all the materials you will need for the course, including drawing tools unique to Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. These unique tools were developed by Brian Bomeisler based on those used by the Old Masters. The Portfolio and its contents are yours to take home and keep.

UNITED STATES
If you are interested in purchasing the portfolio separately or for courses in the United States with Brian Bomeisler, follow the link at the bottom of the page.

DRAWING WITH OTHERS

Drawing in isolation is a particular challenge. It's hard to stay motivated, think of subjects and without any feedback one can feel what is the point of it all. I find it makes a huge difference if I can interact with other artists - this can be 'live' in a class or group or online. Here are some suggestions of where you can find the support you need.
  • Attend a Class This is the season to sign up for a class. There are classes in every genre, plus classes that draw outside, draw from life or draw for a particular purpose such as animation. Most Art Schools offer part-time classes but also investigate Adult Education options and many museums offer short holiday or 1-day weekend classes and workshops.
  • Life Group Have a look for drop-in groups where there is no tuition but often a model. A good way of meeting others and getting experience of drawing from life without the cost of paying for tuition.
  • Find a Drawing Buddy If you have a friend who draws why not arrange to meet up with them on a regular basis to draw. You could go to each other's houses, meet in a cafe or museum or outside. Simply making an appointment to do something with someone else will increase the chance of you actually doing it.
  • Online Forums There are several online communities or groups where you can post your work, ask technical questions, get feedback etc. Each one has its own character so spend some time visiting to see which ones you feel most comfortable in. It's okay to 'lurk' for a while until you feel confident about posting. Ones I'd recommend are:
    Wet Canvas
    Artist Daily
    Everyday Matters
  • Flickr This photo-sharing website has groups of every kind where you can post your work and view work by others.
  • YouTube A good resource for videos of other artists sharing techniques or introducing their work.

You will probably have to experiment and try a few different options or groups before you find what you are looking for but do persevere. Speaking from experience, there is so much to learn from meeting up, talking and sharing with other artists. If you are worried about 'not being good enough' don't be - everyone started some time and youwill improve as long as you practice regularly!
