Virtual Life Class: John Berger

John Berger is primarily known as one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. What is perhaps less well known is that he started his career as a painter. Here are his thoughts, tips and advice on drawing from the recent Channel 4 Life Class tv programme.
  • Life drawing If you are looking at something and that thing is a person – a naked person – after a moment, if you let it happen you will want to be active rather than just be passively looking. One way of being is by drawing what you see. The nakedness of the subject implies a kind of intimacy. At the same time, when we are naked what we have in common becomes more evident… more universal. So there is a strong coming together of the intimate and the human – the universality of all of us – that is essentially what life drawing is about.
  • The relationship between the artist and the model When drawing people – whether it is a portrait or the figure – the contribution of the model/sitter is an active collaboration. It is not about taking the ‘right’ pose or keeping still. It’s about the artist being receptive and the model can send the artist a message to encourage receptivity.
  • The process of drawing the figure When you are looking at the pose it is like a written word – perhaps several words: angle; weight; poise…
You proceed from one to the next.
Think in terms of ‘bridges’. See the road of leg connecting to the back… draw this.
As you look, forget about naming parts of the body because what we are concerned about is movement/stillness and something that resembles a landscape – a bodyscape. Maybe bodies have their own weather too.
Look for weight; a sense of groundedness of parts of the body. Note the difference between difference parts of the body. Look at those areas bearing the weight and those which are not.
Sometimes you have to let yourself go into your confusion.
  • Seeing in the roundIt can be interesting to take a pose and drop it from one side and then draw it from the other ie. In reverse
  • The role of the eraser Erasers are often connected to mistakes. Perhaps it begins in school with the idea that erasers are connected with making a mistake. What you have to erase is just as creative as what you have to put in. Sometimes it is with erasing that you re-find the essential. You discover what is worth seeing. This is the paradox.
  • Everyone can draw in their own way.
