DRAWING EARS:

Ears are another part of the features that students struggle with. There seems to be too much information that threatens to overwhelm the artist and consequently a symbolic ear is often drawn. Ears are important in giving each of us our unique identity therefore it is particularly important in portrait drawing that you take the time to draw what you see – not what you think you see. Some points to consider are:
  • It is important to determine the position of the ears as early as possible as they influence and are part of the whole jigsaw that make up the features of the face. Ignore them at your peril!
  • Position the ear through sighting its relationship to other parts of the body. Beginning students often place the ear far too close to the features. On a profile portrait and a full face portrait, the distance from the eye to the chin equals the distance from the back of the eye to the back of the ear – but don’t assume, always check on your model!
  • Work out the position of the top and bottom of the ear by checking their relationship horizontally across – where and with what does the top of the ear line up with? Do the same with the bottom of the ear. Ears are bigger than you think.
  • Identify the angle of the ear through sighting – some people’s ears are quite perpendicular, others lie at an angle. Sight this position to draw it accurately.
  • Only a small part of the ear may be visible but whatever you can see treat it with the importance it deserves and don’t just decide not to include it.
  • If the ear is covered by hair, the shape of the ear will influence how the hair is following and consequently light and shadow shapes so do bear this in mind.
  • The outer contour or shape of the ear varies hugely from person. Really observe what is happening and build up this contour with short straight architectonic lines – sighting the multitude of angles that make up the curve of the ear.
  • Consider particularly carefully the lobe of the ear – some people have long, shaped lobes, others barely a lobe at all…
  • You don’t have to draw every detail of the inner ear but do look and draw the shapes of light and dark you can see by focusing on negative shapes. Don’t just put down something symbolic and think you’ll get away with it – you won’t! It will look like a symbol
  • Don’t forget to sight the distance from the back of the ear to the back of the hair or skull.
  • Consider whether the ear is in shadow or not and shade it accordingly. This will be influenced by the lighting.

Renaissance Drawings in London

Don't Miss....

FRA ANGELICO TO LEONARDO: RENAISSANCE DRAWINGS

Renaissance Drawings 1-Day Workshop with Philippa Abrahams

If you are inspired by this exhibition to find out more about the techniques and tools of the Renaissance artists I highly recommend a one-day workshop led by Philippa Abrahams, an author, artist and museum conservator.

I have mentioned Philppa's book Beneath the Surface here before which delves into the secrets of the artists through the years.

The workshop will be in London on 26th June and places are limited. Philippa will demonstrate 15th century techniques and then you will have the chance to make and use your own tools.
