Read participants' feedback on the course devised by Dr Edwards and taught by Anna Black

"I have attended many workshops and this one far exceeded my expectations...the results speak for themselves that the pace and content were right. I go away feeling optimistic about the journey of discovery begun this week. I only wish I had discovered these methods sooner - I have been looking but NOT seeing. Venue was an admirable choice - food and accommodation first class."

You can also read some participant feedback and a more indepth account of one participant's experience here (a new window will open)

      DRAWING COACH

When the days are short and the weather is inclement it can seem even harder to find the time to draw but I would really encourage you to make a specific intention to make drawing part of your everyday life. Be realistic about the time you can give but the power of intention is not to be underestimated!
      • Arrange a drawing date - with yourself or only with others who are going to be drawing so you are not distracted.
      • It's cold outside so if you want to draw people find a spot in a coffee shop or railway or bus station. This is the perfect location to practice gesture drawing - quick but authentic drawings capturing the essence of the subject.
      • Museums are great if the weather is cold or wet. They often have drawing stools available and you can draw objects, visitors or even the architecture. Check in advance for any restrictions. Some museums, such as the National Portrait Gallery in London offer evening drop-in classes in the gallery space.
      • Drawing sculpture and plaster casts is a time-honoured way of honing drawing skills. Many museums offer a good selection and in London try the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum.
      • Drawing on location is about practising your observation and drawing skills. Make sure you have lots of inexpensive paper and do LOTS of drawings... it's the quickest and easiest way to get our critical mind to shut up.
      • If venturing outside seems a step too far there's much you can do at home. Copying Old Master drawings is another technique that used to be part of every artist's training. Borrow library books, invest in some books such as those by Dover Art Library (inexpensive books on various themes with A4 size reproductions), and visit on-line museum collections where you can view and copy works of art from the comfort of your sofa. Most museums now offer this facility
