All the 2010 classes are now full but I do run waiting lists in case anyone drops out so do get in touch if you'd like to go on this - or be added to my mailing list so you hear about new dates as soon as they are announced. SKETCHING OR DRAWING? 6 Tips to Get You StartedPeople often tell me they want to be able to do 'quick sketches'. What does this mean? Sketching does suggest a drawing done on the 'hoof', perhaps as preparatory work for something that will be more finished however, all the same skills are needed whether drawing or sketching - drawing negative shapes will strenthen your composition, sighting angles and proportions will create depth, using light and shadow will create mood. Someone who draws quickly is drawing with confidence because they have learned the basic skills of drawing. This confidence is often what people are yearning for. Here are 6 tips to get you started:
And of course - all of this applies whether you are 'sketching' or 'drawing' Here is a link to a travel sketch blog by George Butler that you might want to look at for inspiration. Drawing is a great way to remember a place - whether it's on holiday or just around home...

London Exhibitions in 2010THE REAL VAN GOGH: THE ARTIST AND HIS LETTERS23 January to 18th April 2010 at the Royal Academy, London. This is the largest Van Gogh exhibition since 1968. It's a great opportunity to see letters (he wrote in English and French as well as Dutch)he wrote to his brother Theo, describing the paintings he was working on and often including sketches of them. What comes through is his desire to learn, to improve and persevere... Van Gogh learned to draw and paint only in the last 10 years of his life so there is hope for us yet. It's great too to see some of his larger drawings that are rarely on show. The frustration of the exhibition are the crowds - particularly as the letters are so small it's hard to get up close and see them. Still if you can get there on a quiet day I'd highly recommend it.

A rare opportunity indeed to see drawings from two major collections. "This exhibition is a unique opportunity to discover the evolution of drawing which laid the foundations of the High Renaissance style of Michelangelo and Raphael." Find out more
