*New* Follow-on Course for Alumni

I'm delighted to announce that in 2020 I will be launching a 2-day follow-on course for those of you who have completed the 5-day workshop. I know this is something that people have been asking for!

I have been working with Dr Edwards and Master Instructor Brian Bomeisler over the last few months refining the content and we hope that it will help you consolidate your drawing skills and take them to another level. If you haven't been drawing and things are feeling a bit rusty this would be a great way to get back into it.

This workshop is open to those of you who have completed the 5-day workshop and you will need your portfolio materials. The first one will most likely be in London but I also hope to run them in Scotland.

Register interest

Dates and location are still to be confirmed but do reply to this email if you would like to register interest (without any commitment).

Drawing without a Pencil

Learning to draw is actually about learning to see – learning to see what is actually there rather than the quick, edited version that our brain usually provides for us. The brain is doing its best to make a complex world more manageable for us but while helpful in everyday life, it works against us in drawing.

On the five-day workshop you will learn to see as an artist sees. You will stop seeing the world in short-hand symbols but instead, see things as they really are rather than how you think they are. This opens up a whole new world that provides pleasure way beyond drawing.

One participant wrote to me saying how much visiting exhibitions had been transformed for her since she had done the 5-day workshop - she was seeing things in a totally new way. Another, talked of kayaking and noticing the light on the waves or the colours of the leaves underfoot as he walked his dog.

You can practice seeing at any time – even when you don’t have a pencil in your hand. The next time you have a moment – perhaps standing in a queue or sitting on a bus or train or waiting for the kettle to boil…

Look at the edges How does the light affect the edges. Where are they strong? Where do they disappear?

Explore the negative space around the object/subject Focus on those shapes rather than the subject itself.

Where is the light coming from? See if you can divide the object into light, medium and dark. Where are the brightest areas? Where are shadows – do they have hard edges or soft? Where are the bits that are in-between?

How do different parts of the object/subject relate to each other? Look for vertical and horizontal alignments. Is something above, below or in line with something else. Just practice looking and referencing.

Or keep it simple and just pause, look and really look again!
